Is It Really Soap? Understanding Traditional Tallow Soap

Many people are surprised to learn that much of what sits on store shelves labeled "soap" is not true soap at all.

Mass-produced cleansing bars are often made with synthetic detergents. While they create abundant lather, they can strip the skin of its natural oils — leaving it feeling tight or dry.

Traditional soap, like our tallow bars, is made through a process called saponification — where fats and lye transform into soap and naturally occurring glycerin.

When properly formulated and cured:

  • No lye remains
  • Glycerin stays in the bar
  • The result is a gentle, moisturizing cleanse

Tallow soap creates a creamy, stable lather and a long-lasting bar. Instead of removing everything from the skin's surface, it cleans while helping maintain balance.

It's a return to a slower, simpler method of cleansing — one rooted in tradition.
