Intentional Living: The Kitchen Swap That Started It All

Intentional Living: The Kitchen Swap That Started It All

What if the oil in your frying pan was quietly working against your skin's ability to protect itself?

That question sounds dramatic until it happens to you. Once we removed seed oils from our kitchen, we started noticing something we didn't expect, we were getting less sunburned. That was the moment it really clicked for us that what we were unknowingly putting into our bodies was having a sweeping impact, far beyond just what we thought of as "diet."

Seed oils — think canola, vegetable, soybean, corn oil — are heavily processed and high in the kind of fats that can contribute to inflammation when they make up a large part of your diet. You don't necessarily feel it directly. It shows up sideways, like it did for us.

Swapping seed oils for whole-food fats didn't just change how we cook, it changed how our bodies responded to everyday things, like a day out in the sun.

This was one of the changes born out of that same period a few years back, us paying closer attention, Jordan's influence pushing us to ask more questions, and wanting to live cleaner within reason after hearing about too many people our age facing health issues. We leaned on apps like Yuka and Bobby Approved to help us understand what we were actually buying.

What's in Our Kitchen Now

  • Avocado oil — high smoke point, great for searing and roasting
  • Olive oil — our everyday go-to for dressings, sautéing, and finishing dishes
  • Tallow — our favorite for frying, gives incredible flavor and crisp texture
  • Ghee — nutty and rich, wonderful for baking and higher-heat cooking
  • Butter — simple, real, and still a kitchen staple

Quick Swap Guide

  • Frying or searing → tallow or avocado oil
  • Dressings & marinades → olive oil
  • Baking → ghee or butter
  • Roasting vegetables → avocado oil, tallow or olive oil

Full Honesty

We're not claiming to be perfect about this. Robin still has her one Diet Mountain Dew most days — some habits are harder to let go of than others, and that's okay. This is about progress, not a perfect scorecard.

This swap also opened a door we didn't expect — once we were paying this much attention to what went into our meals, growing more of our own food felt like the natural next step. That's a story for another post, but it's been one of the most rewarding parts of this whole journey.
